What to do in Ishigaki ...
Ishigaki's temperature rarely falls below 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year, and its beautiful beaches boast world class snorkeling and diving. Shiraho, with its crystal clear waters and world famous coral reefs, is just one of the many spots where you can enjoy colorful marine life. Kabira bay is another place not to be missed. Take a glass-bottomed boat out to Kabira reef, and you might even catch a glimpse of an elusive manta ray. Yonehara beach is a great place to go for a bit of snorkeling, and later you might watch the stars come out over the aptly named Sunset beach. If you are into trekking, you might want to try climbing Mount Omoto, the tallest peak in Okinawa. The trail follows a bubbling stream through jungle and forest and is not particularly strenuous. The distinctively shaped Nosoko Mappe is another easy climb and offers extraordinary 360 degree views from its rocky summit. From Ishigaki it is easy to visit the nearby islands that make up the Yaeyama group. Closest is Taketomi, which has preserved its traditional architecture, and Iriomote, much of which is covered by untouched tropical jungle and is home to the endangered Iriomote Lynx. Kayaking up the Nakama River through mangrove forests is another experience you will not soon forget.
Ishigaki is a forgotten part of Japan, a hidden gem quite distinct from mainland Japan, or even from mainland Okinawa. It is a sub-tropical paradise far removed from the bright lights of Tokyo, but with a culture as rich and vibrant as that found in Kyoto or Nara, and it is a perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
